Life in Sixth Form
Sixth Form life is different from any other year group and the transition from Year 11 to Year 12 is well planned by the school. Every student who decides to take on the challenges of further study beyond compulsory education must be prepared to be a thinker, an organiser and a team member.
Attendance
It is essential that students attend all aspects of the curriculum, arriving at school on time for 8.40am and leaving the school site at 3.10pm.
Students should aim for an attendance of 95% across the school year. Students who have an attendance figure below this will be provided with support and parental contact will be made.
Subjects
Students should start with a minimum of three subjects. Some subjects will have multiple teachers so being organised is key. A Level subjects may have coursework and final exams at the end of Year 13. BTEC and Applied subjects will require formal exams and controlled assessments to be completed in Year 12 and 13.
For further information about the subjects offered, please refer to our Sixth Form Course Guide which can be found on our Sixth Form Admissions page.
The Curriculum
We offer a wide range of Level 3 courses including A Levels, BTECs and Applied Diplomas. All A Levels are two-year courses with examinations at the end of Year 13. Whilst BTEC and Applied courses, recognised as equivalent to A Levels, are generally more vocational and practical. Studied over two years, these courses are highly valued by both employers and universities and they may include assessments and coursework throughout Year 12 and 13.
Students enrol for a fulltime study programme with most studying three subjects. There may be an opportunity for some students to study four A Levels, but this will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Universities base their entry criteria on three A Levels (or equivalent) so there is no advantage gained by studying more. By studying three subjects, students will have more time to focus on those courses and achieve the best possible grades.
Alongside their A Level, BTEC and Applied Level 3 courses, students will complete our Enrichment Programme which involves them completing volunteer work across four areas: Academics; Faith & Service; Culture; Sport & Wellbeing. This allows students to give back to the school community whilst developing the soft skills required for university and employment. Students will receive a certificate of completion to show their commitment and vigour.
Students will also study Core RE, partake in a Games lesson each week and have wide access to extra-curricular opportunities.
Independent Study
Students will have a maximum of 12 independent study periods on their timetable. These are scheduled lessons and will take place in study hall. Students should bring work with them and can be supported by our Sixth Form Development Manager with time management and revision strategies.
Students must attend all scheduled sessions on their timetable including Core RE, PSHE, Tutor time and Games.
Expectations of study
To be successful in your studies, you need to balance your time carefully. Most students will have part time jobs or be involved with other activities outside school. Although we encourage this, it is essential that you get the balance right. Therefore, we would expect:
- 5 hours of independent study per subject, either in school or at home.
- A maximum of 12 hours part time work per week.
- Homework to be planned for and completed on time.
- Part-time work, extra-curricular activities and driving lessons do not take place during school hours.
Sixth Form dress code
Students are expected to adhere to our dress code, and be prepared to work throughout the day. All Sixth Form students must wear their school lanyard at all times so that they can be identified. The lanyard also allows students to swipe in and out of the Sixth Form building.
