Wellbeing & Mental Health
At St Gregory’s Catholic School, we aim to support all our students with their wellbeing and mental health needs, and we do this by ensuring they have access to a wide range of robust and thoughtfully developed wellbeing programmes and interventions. We aim to create a school environment which promotes resilience, positive mental health and wellbeing amongst students and staff, as well as the wider school community.
Wellbeing underpins all aspects of school life, and we understand the importance of supporting both parents and students during their formative years from Year 7 to Year 13. We ensure that we incorporate all aspects of wellbeing including physical, emotional, social, intellectual, spiritual, and occupational wellbeing. This includes:
- A robust mental health curriculum delivered through PSHE and assemblies
Mental health and wellbeing modules are covered from Year 7 to 13, with assemblies taking place every term with a specific focus, such as online safety. PSHE covers Health and Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World, which can support all aspects of wellbeing.
- A supportive pastoral structure for all year groups
Students are supported by a carefully designed pastoral team, which starts with their Tutor who they see at the start of every day. Every year group also has their own designated Pastoral Manager and Head of Year, with an additional Key Stage Leader overseeing all pastoral aspects.
- Safeguarding
Our Designated Safeguarding Team support students and parents with safeguarding concerns, implementing support where needed.
- Connect Mentoring for students identified by staff
Connect Mentoring, a volunteer organisation run by Life and Soul, provide trained mentors to support students with specific needs such as anxiety and friendships.
- In-school Place2Be counselling service
Place2Be offer one-to-one counselling sessions, either on a planned or ad-hoc basis. Counsellors are available in school every day, with access made easy through Pastoral Manager referrals, or through drop boxes which allow students to request support. Parental permission and feedback is paramount to this process.
- NHS Kent Emotional Wellbeing Team
A Kent-wide initiative, allowing access to CBT trained specialists that can support more focused needs for individual students. Referrals are made through the Pastoral team or through GPs.
- A designated Senior Mental Health Lead
Mrs Morrissey is a qualified Senior Mental Health Lead and oversees all aspects of student and staff wellbeing in school, including liaising with outside agencies.
- Student Wellbeing Ambassadors
Our Wellbeing Ambassadors are representatives from Year 7 through to Year 13 and support with fundraising and raising awareness of wellbeing for students.
- Wellbeing charity and events to raise awareness throughout the year
Regular charity events, such as Hello Yellow for Young Minds, allow wellbeing and mental health to be at the forefront of education at St Gregory’s Catholic School.
- Student Voice
Students receive termly surveys across a range of topics. Their input helps to directly drive key areas in school and helps to identify topics for the future. Students can also speak to one of the many student leaders to share their views.
- Regular parental information on how to support your child with their wellbeing
Parental sessions, both in-house and external, will be signposted to you and your child so that we can all support the wellbeing of our students.
- PE, Clubs & Societies
Physical wellbeing is incredibly important for our people and all students from Year 7 to 12 receive PE as part of the curriculum offer. Our extra-curricular clubs and societies offer a diverse range of options that can allow students to develop skills outside of the main curriculum.
